Spring 2000 Short Course

The Education Committee met on December 14, 1999 at the offices of Iowa DNR Field Office 5. Committee members and guests present included Steve Moehlmann, Royce Stephen, Jim Stricker, Tom Thorpe, Stephen Jones, Rhonda Guy, Dick Burbank (Maintenance Committee), Tom Bender (IAWWA), and Marcia Decker (IRWA).

I reported that the Iowa Section of AWWA has established a schedule for future short courses with the Spring short course set for the last Tuesday and Wednesday of April alternating between University Park Holiday Inn in West Des Moines and Radisson Highlander Plaza in Iowa City and the Fall short course set for the Tuesday and Wednesday of the week following Labor Day in Des Moines. The committee expressed great concern that the proposed Fall short course is scheduled too early, especially for small systems. They liked the 1999 dates much better. They expect that the IRWA conference in Okoboji in mid-September will significantly reduce attendance at the Fall short course because they don’t think that small systems can afford to send their operators to both the short course and Okoboji, and Okoboji is significantly cheaper. They suggested a postcard survey of this year attendees to see if they prefer September or November/December. They directed me to present their concerns to the IWPCA Executive Committee at the January meeting.

Future short course schedule proposed by IAWWA:

  • Fall 2000: Sept 12-13, Des Moines
  • Spring 2001 Basic Short Course & UHL Symposium: April 23-25, Iowa City
  • Fall 2001: Sept 11-12, West Des Moines
  • Spring 2002 Basic Short Course & UHL Symposium: April 22-24, West Des Moines
  • Fall 2002: Sept 10-11, West Des Moines

Action Item: The committee recommends that Executive Committee discuss the Fall Short Course proposed dates with the IAWWA Executive Committee and try to move the dates to the end of November or early December.

The committee realizes that it may be too late to make any changes for 2000 but may be in time for 2001.

I reported that the Spring short course will start with the UHL symposium on May 1 and the short course on May 2 - 3 at the University Park Holiday Inn, West Des Moines.

The committee discussed and agreed upon topics, speakers, times, and contacts for the Spring short course.

I presented the following suggestions from the Fall short course:

  • Evaluation forms with space for future topics and speakers should be provided
  • Dates and locations for future workshops should be printed on the program
  • Certification grade and type of certification should be added to name tags

The committee strongly agreed with the first two suggestions. They thought the third suggestion might present a logistical problem and would defer to IAWWA.

Dates and Locations for IWPCA Education Committee Meetings

  • April 2000: Committee Meeting to Review Spring Short Course Preparations
  • May 17, 2000: Planning Meeting for the Fall Short Course, Des Moines
  • June 8, 2000: Committee Goal Setting, IWPCA Annual Conference, Council Bluffs
  • September 26, 2000: Planning Meeting for Spring Short Course, Des Moines

Budget Item: I would like the committee to hold at least quarterly meetings in addition to our goal setting meeting at the IWPCA annual conference

Follow-Up Concern

The results of the discussion regarding the shared expenses between IWPCA and IAWWA (agenda item K of the November 5, 1999 Executive Committee meeting, page 5 of the minutes).
